I receive my prescription drug benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA) and have not enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, will I still receive a rebate?
No. If you receive VA benefits and have not enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, you will not receive the Doughnut Hole rebate. On the positive side, if you are receiving VA prescription drug benefits, you do not have a Doughnut Hole in your VA coverage.
As a note, if you receive VA prescription benefits, you do not need to join a Medicare Part D plan - unless you need additional prescription coverage. VA prescription benefits are considered "creditable" prescription drug coverage for the purposes of the Medicare Part D program and you will not be subject to a late-enrollment penalty if you later choose to join a prescription drug plan.
if you receive VA benefits and need additional prescription coverage, you can join a Medicare Part D plan during the Annual Coordinated Election Period (or AEP). Your Medicare Part D plan can then be used to cover medications that are otherwise excluded from your VA coverage.
