You are correct in your assumption that Clonazepam is not covered by your Medicare Part D plans
Clonazepam is not covered by any Medicare Part D plan.
By design, certain classes of medication were intentionally excluded from the Medicare Part D program. We explain more about this on our site under "
What Drugs are Excluded" at https://q1medicare.com/PartD-MoreAboutThe-PartD-PlanFormulary.php.
For instance, certain anti-anxiety and anti-seizure drugs -
Barbiturates and
Benzodiazepines, including: Klonopin (for which the generic drug name is Clonazepam).
Yet, it is possible that if someone is receiving medication assistance (full Medicaid) under a state Medicaid program, they may have their coverage of Clonazepam extended outside of their Medicare Part D coverage.
In addition, some Medicare Part D plans do provide "extended" coverage for medications outside of their Medicare Part D formulary or drug list. However, this exception is really not applicable to your situation being that you and your mother both have the same Part D plan from the same Part D provider.
In short, Clonazepam is not covered by Medicare Part D and if your mother is receiving some coverage benefit, it must be outside of the Part D program and perhaps through your state Medicaid program. If you wish to get more information on the Extra Help or State assistance program, please see:
