As some of you noted in your eMails and phone calls, there seems to be several different interpretations of the 2009 Medicare Part D prescription drug plan data.
In particular, one person noticed the total number of Part D plans qualifying for the Low Income Subsidy counted across all the states seems to vary from our number (308 Medicare Part D plans in 2009). Although we present the data as grouped by state, we actually look at the CMS Regions (or groups of states). So the summary of Part D information that is found in Washington is the same as the information found in Oregon (both Region 30). We display a summary of Part D prescription drug plan data for each state, as listed below.
Also, we only include information on Medicare Part D prescription drug plans and do not include the premiums for Medicare Advantage plans that offer a prescription drug benefit (MA-PDs) so our calculations and numbers sometimes vary from the information released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Finally, we also chose not “weight” our statistics or analysis based on enrollment information (for instance, where a Part D plan with more enrollees is weighted more than a Part D plan with fewer members. Rather, our analysis considers all Part D plans equally across the country.
