March 2016 summary of the new medications added to Medicare Part D plan formularies (drug lists) Part 1: A-L

Category: Monthly Formulary changes
Published: Apr, 09 2016 02:04:47

The March, 2016 Medicare Part D plan formulary data (or drug lists) includes the addition of 270 new National Drug Codes (NDC) to the Medicare Part D program.  These NDCs represent 158 different drugs, many with multiple strengths. There were so many new NDCs new to the March dataset, that we need to split this article into Part 1 (drug beginning with the letters A through L) and Part 2 (M through Z) to coverage all of the new medications.

Almotriptan Malate, the generic for Axert was added to many 2016 Medicare Part D formularies, along with Asprin-Dipyridam, the generic for Aggrenox;  Bexarotene, the generic for Targretin; Dutasteride, the generic for Avodart; Dutasteride-Tamsulosin, the generic for Jalyn; Levofloxacin-D5W, the generic for Levaquin. Drugs starting with the letters M through Z can  be found in Part 2: M-Z.

The NDC uniquely identifies a particular drug, manufacturer, strength, and packaging combination. The NDC is often shown on your prescription bottle as an 11-digit code (see the charts below) or could be formatted as 00000-0000-00 where the first set of numbers identifies the manufacturer, the second set of number identifies the product and strength, and the third set of numbers identifies the packaging.

There are many reasons for NDCs to be added to the Medicare Part D program, a summary for all 270 new medications is as follows:

The plan deposits money from Medicare into the account. You can use this money to pay for your health care costs, but only Medicare-covered expenses count toward your deductible. The amount deposited is usually less than your deductible amount, so you generally have to pay out-of-pocket before your coverage begins.

  • There are additional restrictions to join an MSA plan, and enrollment is generally for a full calendar year unless you meet certain exceptions. Those who disenroll during the calendar year will owe a portion of the account deposit back to the plan. Contact the plan provider for additional information.

  • Medicare beneficiaries can file a complaint with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services by calling 1-800-MEDICARE 24 hours a day/7 days or using the medicare.gov site. Beneficiaries can appoint a representative by submitting CMS Form-1696.
