According to the 2014 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare Part D landscape data,
Medicare beneficiaries will have slightly fewer stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
choices in 2014.
In 2014, an average of 29 stand-alone Medicare Part D plans (not including Medicare Advantage plans)
are being offered in each state across the country. In comparison, there were 31 stand-alone
2013 Medicare Part D plans available - and there was an average of 49 stand-alone Medicare Part D plans
offered in each region during the
2009 plan year.
A detailed overview of the Medicare Part D landscape data can be found in the
on this site PDP-Facts
section with Part D plan summaries on a national and state level.
As was true last year, the largest selection of 2014 Medicare Part D plans are available to residents of
Pennsylvania and
West Virginia,
with each state having the choice of 34 plans,
a slight reduction from the 38 different
Medicare Part D plans offered by these states in 2013.
Alternatively, the smallest selection of Part D plans in the country is found in
Hawaii,
offering 24 stand-alone 2014 Medicare Part D plans, a one plan increase from the
23
different 2013 Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. (This can be compared to the
41
Part D plans offered back in 2010).

What are the changes in 2014 Medicare Part D plans?
As we know from past experience, some Medicare Part D prescription drug plans are discontinued
each year or merged into other Medicare Part D plans - and some new Medicare Part D plans usually
enter into the market.
If you are enrolled in a 2013 Medicare Part D plan (or Medicare Advantage plan) that is not being
offered next year, your current 2013 plan will notify you that the plan will not be continued into
2014. In this situation, you would not have prescription coverage for 2014 unless you
join another stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (or PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan
that offers prescription drug coverage (MA-PD).
An example of a Medicare Part D plan that will not be offered in 2014 is the
Humana Complete plan,
that will no longer be available in 27 Medicare regions. In addition, the Humana Walmart-Preferred
Rx plan will be called the Humana Preferred Rx in 2014. And Humana will introduce a new Humana
Walmart Rx Plan.
Cigna is re-naming Plan 1
as Secure and Plan 2 as Secure-Max (both available in all states). Cigna is also introducing a
new plan Secure-Xtra. Cigna has purchased HealthSpring and will re-name the HealthSpring plan
to Cigna-HealthSpring-Rx.
The Reader’s Digest
plan that was offered in all states except NY, will change to the 2014 Health Markets Value Rx.
Two new entries into the Medicare Part D market are
Transamerica MedicareRx
offering the Choice and Classic plans in almost all states. Symphonix
will offer the Symphonix Rite Aid Value Rx and the Value Rx.
(As of now, SilverScript and
SmartD Rx
are still under CMS sanction and not included in the 2014 CMS Medicare Part D landscape data.)
