Medicare Part A and Part B Premium & Deductible Archives 2009

2009 Part A (Hospital) Monthly Premium & Deductible

You usually don’t pay a monthly Premium for Part A coverage if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. If you aren’t eligible for premium-free Part A, you may be able to buy Part A if you meet one of the following conditions:
  • You’re 65 or older, and you have (or are enrolling in) Part B and meet the citizenship and residency requirements.
  • You’re under 65, disabled, and your premium-free Part A coverage ended because you returned to work. (If you’re under 65 and disabled, you can continue to get premium-free Part A for up to 8 1/2 years after you return to work.)
The 2009 Medicare Part A premium for those who are not eligible for premium free Medicare Part A is $443.

The Medicare Part A deductible for all Medicare beneficiaries is $1,068.


2009 Part B (Medical) Monthly Premium & Deductible

How Much Does Part B Coverage Cost? You pay the Part B premium each month. Most people will pay up to the standard premium amount. However, if your modified adjusted gross income as reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago (the most recent tax return information provided to Social Security by the IRS) is above a certain amount (see chart below), you may pay more. This is called the income related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA).

Your modified adjusted gross income is your adjusted gross income plus your tax exempt interest income. Each year, Social Security will notify you if you have to pay more than the standard premium. The amount you pay can change each year depending on your income. If you have to pay a higher amount for your Part B premium and you disagree, you can appeal the IRMAA.

2009 Part B Deductible
The 2009 Medicare Part B annual deductible is $135.

2009 Part C (Medicare Advantage) Monthly Premium

Medicare Advantage plan premiums*, deductibles, and benefits will depend on the Medicare Advantage plans available in your service area (county or ZIP code). Along with your Medicare Advantage plan premium, you must continue to pay your Part B premium (and Part A premium if you do not receive your Medicare Part A coverage premium-free).

The 2009 Medicare Advantage plan premiums range from $0 to $397.

2009 Part D (Medicare Prescription Drug Plan) Monthly Premium & Deductible

Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) premiums*, deductibles, and benefits vary by plan and state. Remember that you can receive Part D prescription drug coverage from a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage (MAPD).

The 2009 Part D plan premiums range from $1 to $137.

The 2009 standard Part D plan deductible is $295, however the actual plan deductible can be anywhere from $0 to $295.

  • When enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must continue to pay your Medicare Part B premium.
  • Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes may be required to pay both a Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). Read more on IRMAA.
  • Medicare Advantage plans that include prescription drug coverage (MAPDs) are considered Medicare Part D plans and members with higher incomes may be subject to the Medicare Part D Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), just as members in stand-alone Part D plans. In certain situations, you can appeal IRMAA.
  • You must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. Members may enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan only during specific times of the year. Contact the Medicare plan for more information.
  • If you are enrolled in a Medicare plan with Part D prescription drug coverage, you may be eligible for financial Extra Help to assist with the payment of your prescription drug premiums and drug purchases. To see if you qualify for Extra Help, call: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048, 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week or consult www.medicare.gov; the Social Security Office at 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.   • Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-Star rating system. Star Ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next.

  • Medicare MSA Plans combine a high deductible Medicare Advantage Plan and a trust or custodial savings account (as defined and/or approved by the IRS). The plan deposits money from Medicare into the account. You can use this money to pay for your health care costs, but only Medicare-covered expenses count toward your deductible. The amount deposited is usually less than your deductible amount, so you generally have to pay out-of-pocket before your coverage begins.
  • Medicare MSA Plans do not cover prescription drugs. If you join a Medicare MSA Plan, you can also join any separate (stand-alone) Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
  • There are additional restrictions to join an MSA plan, and enrollment is generally for a full calendar year unless you meet certain exceptions. Those who disenroll during the calendar year will owe a portion of the account deposit back to the plan. Contact the plan provider for additional information.
  • Medicare beneficiaries may enroll through the CMS Medicare Online Enrollment Center located at www.medicare.gov.
  • Medicare beneficiaries can file a complaint with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services by calling 1-800-MEDICARE 24 hours a day/7 days or using the medicare.gov site. Beneficiaries can appoint a representative by submitting CMS Form-1696.
