Note about COBRA
COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985) is a law that may allow you to keep health coverage from your or your spouse's employer after the employment ends. When the employment ends, you will get only one
Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to sign up for Part B without paying a penalty, whether or not you have COBRA coverage.
Part D works a little differently. For Part D, if you leave an employer-sponsored plan (including COBRA), you have a Special Enrollment Period.
Before you elect COBRA, talk with your
State Health Insurance Assistance Program to see if buying a
Medigap Policy and/or a Medicare drug plan is better for you than COBRA. See
