Can I keep my employer health plan and also join a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan?

Employer drug coverage · updated Oct 28, 2024

Probably not. Most people are not able to have both an employer health plan that includes prescription coverage and a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

In fact, if you have prescription coverage through your employer health plan, and you enroll in a Medicare Part D plan, you actually risk losing all of your employer health coverage.

Important: Before enrolling in a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) or Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage (MAPD), be sure to contact your employer health plan administrator for further information.
