April 2013 Summary of the Most Recent Updates for the Medicare Part D Plan Formularies (Drug Lists)

The most recent (April 2013) Medicare Part D plan formulary data (or drug lists) updates include the addition of 267 new National Drug Codes (NDC) to the Medicare Part D program. These represent 163 different drugs, many with multiple strengths or delivery forms.

The NDC uniquely identifies a particular drug, manufacturer, strength, and packaging combination. The NDC is often shown on your prescription bottle as an 11-digit code (see the charts below) or could be formatted as 00000-0000-00 where the first set of numbers identifies the manufacturer, the second set of number identifies the product and strength, and the third set of numbers identifies the packaging.

There are many reasons for NDCs to be added to the Medicare Part D program, a summary is a follows:

The majority of the 267 new NDCs included new drug strengths and in some cases manufacturers. Seven new generic alternatives were introduced:

CEVIMELINE HCL generic equivalent for Evoxac® is on 37 PDP and 169 MAPD formularies
CIDOFOVIR generic equivalent for Vistide® is on 24 PDP and 140 MAPD formularies
MODAFINIL generic equivalent for Provigil® is on 58 PDP and 219 MAPD formularies
MONTELUKAST SODIUM generic equivalent for Singulair® is on 66 PDP and 235 MAPD formularies
PIOGLITAZONE HCL generic equivalent for Actos® is on 63 PDP and 220 MAPD formularies
TIAGABINE HCL generic equivalent for Gabitril® is on 60 PDP and 200 MAPD formularies
TOLTERODINE TARTRATE generic equivalent for Detrol LA® is on 54 PDP and 200 MAPD formularies
