August 2017 summary of the new medications added to Medicare Part D prescription drug plan formularies (drug lists)

The August, 2017 Medicare Part D plan formulary data (or drug list updates) includes the addition of 102 new National Drug Codes (NDCs) to the Medicare Part D program.  These NDCs represent 63 different drugs, many with multiple strengths.

Seven (7) new generic equivalents were added, Clofarabine, the generic for Clolar(r), Busulfan, the generic for Busulfex(r), multiple strengths of Ezetimibe-Simvastatin, the generic for Vytorin (r), multiple strengths of FLUTICASONE-SALMETEROL, the generic for Advair Diskus(r), Advair HFA(r), and AIRDUO RESPICLICK(r), Meperidine Hydrochloride, the generic for Demerol(r), Tazarotene, the generic for Tazorac(r), and Zileuton the generic for Zyflo(r).

What exactly is an NDC?
As a reminder, the NDC uniquely identifies a particular drug, manufacturer, strength, and packaging combination. The NDC for your medication is often shown on your prescription bottle as an 11-digit code (see the charts below) or could be formatted as 00000-0000-00 where the first set of numbers identifies the manufacturer, the second set of number identifies the product and strength, and the third set of numbers identifies the packaging.

Why is there a new NDC?
New NDCs can be added to the Medicare Part D program for a number of reasons and a summary for all 43 new medications is as follows:
