Do all Medicare prescription drug plans place the same medications on the same drug tiers?

Your Formulary (Drug List) · published Oct 24, 2021

No.   Not only can Medicare prescription drug plans have different drug tier definitions, but drug plans do not always place the same medications on the same formulary tiers (or have similar cost-sharing on the same tier).

For example, in Florida, the drug Quetiapine Fumarate (the generic for Seroquel®) is a Tier 2: Generic on 16 PDP formularies, but a Tier 3: Preferred Brand Drug on four formularies and a Tier 4: Non-Preferred Brand Drug on one Medicare Part D formulary.

Please note fixed copays on the 21 Medicare Part D plans that cover this generic drug can range from $0 to $47.

To see where a specific drug is placed on each Medicare Part D plan’s formulary, you can use our the drug finder the drug finder Drug Finder.

You can review a chart of formulary structures and the number of Medicare prescription drug plans using different drug tier structures and definitions.
