Medicare Part D beneficiaries will have about the same number of Medicare Part D prescription drug plan choices available in 2013, that is, an average of 31 Medicare Part D plans are available in each Medicare Part D region or state. For comparison, there was an average of 49 Part D plans offered in each region during the 2009 plan year.
The largest selection of Medicare Part D plans in the country are available to the residents of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, each offer 38 different 2013 Medicare Part D plans, which is a slight increase from the 36 Medicare Part D plans offered by the states in 2012. Alternatively, Alaska and Hawaii will offer only 23 different 2013 Part D plans, the smallest selection of Part D plans in the country (as compared to the 41 Part D plans offered way-back in 2010).

Some 2012 Medicare Plans are no longer available in 2013
As we know from past experience, some Medicare Part D prescription drug plans are discontinued each year or merged into other Medicare Part D plans. If you are enrolled in a 2012 Medicare Part D plan (or Medicare Advantage plan) that is not being offered next year, your 2012 plan will notify you that the plan will not be continued into 2013. In this situation, you would not have prescription coverage for 2013 unless you join another stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (or PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan that offers prescription drug coverage (MA-PD). Examples of 2012 Medicare plans that will not be offered in 2013 are the BravoRx Plans, CCRx plans, and Health Net Plans
On the positive side, a number of new Medicare Part D plans will be introduced in 2013. AARP will introduce the Saver Plus plan, WellCare will discontinue their Signature plan but introduce a new Extra plan. The Reader’s Digest plan is available in all states except NY and the SmartD Rx plans will also now be offered in all states across the country.
How will your current 2012 Medicare Part D plan change in 2013?
