Some Good News: Not all 2012 Medicare Part D plans changed significantly

Annual Medicare plan changes · published Oct 5, 2011

Although each year Medicare Part D prescription drug plans usually change some aspect of their coverage (increase premiums, drop medications, add drug Usage Management requirements, change the Tier-structure of their formulary); some 2011 Medicare Part D plans made only small or incremental annual changes to their 2012 plans.

For example, if you are one of the 262,922 Californians who are enrolled in the WellCare Classic plan, the chart below shows how your plan has changed since it was introduced in 2007.  Notice that the initial deductible for the WellCare Classic plan has followed Medicare’s annual defined standard benefit parameters most years - and that the plan's monthly premiums have increased only slightly in the past years.

WellCare Classic (PDP) - California
2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012
Monthly Premium $9.70 $19.00 $24.00 $24.30 $31.50 $31.50
Initial Deductible $265 $250 $295 $310 $310 $320

Naturally, if you are a Member of this plan, you also want to check the 2012 plan formulary to ensure that your medications are still being covered at a reasonable costs-sharing level.
