Warning: Scam Targets Insurance Agents and Brokers

Marketing Medicare products · published Jul 24, 2009

Several state Insurance Commissions are warning insurance agents and brokers of a new scam directed at collecting agent's personal and credit card information for non-existent penalty payments.

Individuals claiming to represent a state Insurance Department are contacting insurance agents claiming that the agent owes a fictitious penalty payment.

The callers claim that the contacted agent or broker will lose their state insurance license if the fees are not paid.  Agents are then asked to provide social security numbers and credit card information.

As noted in information sent out by several Insurance Departments, agents are contacted in writing with any payment requests - not via the telephone.

Agents are urged to to contact their respective state Insurance Departments before providing any personal or credit card information during such telephone inquiries.

As of early July 2009, this scam was spreading and was being investigated in several states including California, Colorado, Nevada and Oklahoma.
