Most 2013 Medicare Part D Plans Will Have an Initial Deductible

Annual Medicare plan changes · published Oct 2, 2012

Since 2007, the number of Medicare Part D plans choices has decreased and so have the relative number of stand-alone Medicare Part D plans that offer a $0 initial deductible - meaning that relatively more Medicare Part D plans are being offered with an initial deductible.

Specifically, of the 1875 Medicare Part D plans available In 2007, around 60% of the Medicare Part D plans being offerd had a $0 initial deductible.  However, according to our calculations, less than half (45%) of the 1045 stand-alone Medicare Part D plans in 2013 will offer a $0 initial deductible.

As an example, of the 33 2012 Medicare Part D plans available in Ohio, 16 Part D plans will have a $0 initial deductible in 2013.

As reference, the standard Medicare Part D Initial deductible started at $250 in 2006 and now in 2013, the standard or model 2013 Medicare Part D plan design will increase to a $325 initial deductible; as compared to the $320 standard initial deductible in 2012 Medicare Part D plans.

Please note that most 2013 Part D plans will not exactly follow the 2013 standard model Medicare Part D plan and plan providers can offer either the $325 deductible or another (lower) variation on the initial deductible in their 2013 Part D plans (for example, the has a $150 initial deductible).
